A Weekend of Cultural Wonder in Birgu: Candlelit Heritage Malta Event on 12th & 13th October 2024

If you love history, culture, and breathtaking architecture, then Birgu is calling your name this October. While we sadly won’t be experiencing the annual Birgufest this year, Heritage Malta has something equally mesmerizing in store—a Weekend of Wonder at three iconic sites in Birgu, all illuminated by candlelight. Whether you’re a local or a traveler, this is the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich history of Malta’s former capital, explore its cultural gems, and enjoy an evening of guided tours at discounted rates.

Discover Birgu’s Rich Heritage: Museums with a Twist

On Saturday, 12th October, and Sunday, 13th October, three of Birgu’s most significant historical sites—the Malta Maritime Museum, the Inquisitor’s Palace, and Fort St. Angelo—will be offering discounted admission, optional guided tours, and extended hours, allowing you to truly dive into the heart of Malta’s past. On Saturday, the experience will be even more magical, with candlelit paths and flickering torches casting a warm glow across the entire city.

These sites won’t just offer a glimpse of Maltese history—they’re hosting four immersive exhibitions, including the Malta Maritime Museum’s ‘An Island at the Crossroads,’ which explores Malta’s long-standing role as a hub of maritime navigation, and the Inquisitor’s Palace’s ‘Fare Convito – The Archaeology of Banqueting in Hospitaller Malta,’ which delves into the elegant rituals of Baroque banqueting.

For history lovers, Fort St. Angelo’s powerful new exhibition, ‘Betrayal and Vengeance – The Slaves’ Conspiracy of 1749,’ will offer insights into one of Malta’s most dramatic historical episodes, while the ‘Threads of Faith’ exhibition will showcase the incredible liturgical vestments worn by clergy during the reign of the Order of St. John.

Why Visit Birgu?

Birgu, also known as Vittoriosa, is one of Malta’s oldest and most charming cities. Its narrow streets, stunning views of the Grand Harbour, and historic sites make it a must-visit destination for anyone who enjoys culture and history. The candlelit ambience during this event will give visitors a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience Birgu in a unique and magical way. There’s nothing quite like walking the ancient streets, surrounded by centuries of history, while soaking in the warm glow of candlelight.

Whether you're planning a day trip or a weekend getaway, Birgu offers a tranquil alternative to Valletta's bustling streets, yet it is still just a short water taxi ride across the harbour. It’s also the perfect place to stay if you want to be close to other tourist destinations like Mdina and the Three Cities. And don't forget—Birgu is only a 15-minute drive from Malta International Airport, making it an incredibly convenient destination for tourists.
